ACAWRA Overview

The African Canadian Association of Waterloo Region and Area(ACAWRA) works to promote awareness about Africa and Africans in the Waterloo Region and area. We are committed to bringing African communities together through capacity building and self-empowerment to enhance the welfare of African descendants in the area.
The association in collaboration with other groups, agencies and the larger community will advocate for better access to community resources for Africans in the region through networking, social supports, education and programmatic interventions.

Our Vision

Our vision is to build a strong and confident African community in the Waterloo Region & Area. We are committed to working in collaboration with community agencies, government organizations, and the community at large to promoting harmony among Africans and to enhancing the general well-being of African descendants who reside in the area.

Our Mission

The African-Canadian Association of Waterloo Region & Area strive, with unity of purpose and single voice, advocate, educate and promote issues of mutual benefit to people of African decent living in the Waterloo Region and area. We are committed to bring African communities together through capacity building and self-empowerment to promote the general well-being of African descendants who live in the area. The Association with other relevant groups, agencies and the larger community will advocate maintaining acceptance, respect and better access of community resources for Africans in the region through networking, social support, increasing awareness and appropriate programmatic interventions.

Our Goals

ACAWRA aims to:

  1. To build a dynamic and inclusive African community.
  2. To enhance mutual support among those of African descent within the region.
  3. To engage our children and the larger community in learning about African culture and heritage and the realities faced by immigrants and refugees from Africa.
  4. To identify common issues/concerns that require programs and promotes our health by addressing issues that affect our day-to-day life (isolation, stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, racism, etc.)
  5. To initiate action and to empower Africans to find solutions for issues faced within our community.
  6. To support, strengthen, build and work with the various African ethnocultural associations and groups who share common concern for Africans;
  7. To increase linkages and build solidarity with all African communities and groups locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.
  8. To celebrate all the different African cultures represented within our region.
  9. To explore ways that would help us in building and documenting information and knowledge about Africans in the area and share with others.
